Review: Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man, November 2009

"Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man, - a Mass for Peace, was a particularly appropriate offering from the Chigwellian Choral Society at its concert held during the Remembrance weekend.

A mixture of mediaeval plainchant, the Catholic Mass, jazz, jigs, a call to prayer and settings of English poetry and prose, it provided an absorbing, diverting and, yes, entertaining journey through the trials and tribulations of war from the trenches of Flanders to the mushroom cloud over Hiroshima. It provided a stimulating counterpart to the exquisite jewel of Haydn’s Little Organ Mass which opened the concert.

Despite its disparate elements, conductor Lindsay Benson held everything together and conjured wonderful performances from orchestra, choir and the gifted quartet of young soloists. From the call to prayer, via the piercing beauty of the Benedictus, to the rumbustious antics of percussion and piccolo, it gripped the capacity audience. And the subdued ending, with its hope for peace, perfectly matched the elegiac mood conjured in the first half of the concert by Barber’s Adagio for Strings."
